Portrait of John Wardle

Founder, Wardle

Juror

John Wardle is founding partner of Wardle and has led the growth of the studio from working on small domestic dwellings to university buildings, museums and large commercial offices with studios in Melbourne and Sydney.

John has an international reputation as a design architect and has developed a design process that builds upon ideas that evolve from a site’s topography, landscape, history and context and importantly a client’s particular aspirations and values. He connects those within and beyond the practice to harness the beliefs, skills and ambitions of many. John has been designing houses for longer than he cares to admit, and in doing so he has developed an innate understanding of the finer scale of materials and is highly perceptive to the unique character of every project.

The work of Wardle has been celebrated in the publication of two monographs: Volume – John Wardle Architects in 2008 and in 2016, This Building Likes Me, both published by Thames and Hudson. The practice has won coveted national and international awards for education, residential, public and civic design. John was honoured in 2020 with the Gold Medal, the Australian Institute of Architects highest individual distinction.
